Description

An interactive whiteboard (IWB) is a large interactive display that connects to a computer and projector. A projector projects the computer’s desktop onto the board’s surface where users control the computer using a pen, finger, stylus, or other device. The board is typically mounted to a wall or floor stand.

It requires 3 different components for its operation

A. Device as shown in the figure (that can be mounted on any hard surface)
B. Computer/ laptop
C. Projector
They are used in a variety of settings, including classrooms at all levels of education, in corporate board rooms and work groups, in training rooms for professional sports coaching, in broadcasting studios and others. With the connection of electronic whiteboard to the computer, the projector will display on the electronic whiteboard contents of the computer. The functions as follows:
Simulate mouse function:
It can operate the electronic pen as the mouse on the projecting screen of the electronic whiteboard and can control the computer connected with the electronic whiteboard.
Writing function:
Varieties of pens (like Nite writer pens and laser pens) can write on the interface of the software, the contents written can be saved, printed, and replayed; furthermore, it also has function of scripts identification.
Multi-media function:
Multimedia resources, such as videos, photos and flashes can be supported
(Note: It can run any features or function that your computer can support)Uses of interactive board:

1) Interactive-whiteboard is suitable for learners of all ages and allows them to work collaboratively.

2) It looks and can work like a conventional-whiteboard. Thus it maintains the familiarity one has with the traditional-whiteboard.

3) It is a better option than a computer monitor when it comes to classroom presentation. Through a PC only limited number of students can be given presentation at a time, with IWB entire class can be covered very easily as it is much bigger in size.

4) An-IWB allows integration of audio, video, graphics, text and animation (from wide variety of media like CD-ROM, Internet, intranet, multimedia projector, DVD, VCD, student response system, TV,radio etc) with the lessons. Thus it provides not only enjoyment and interactivity but also makes the learning process much more interesting and fun. It enables teachers to adopt different learning styles to meet the learners’ need. Thus it can also help in creating a personalized learning environment.

5) Anything drawn or written on the interactive-whiteboard-surface can be saved on a computer hard disk through a whiteboard-software. In this way teachers can save and share there work and re-used it subsequently in case a repetition is required.

6) Contents from websites, blogs, forums, newsgroups, wikis and other web based resources can be brought on the IWB-surface through a LCD projector. Thus it promotes e-learning.

7) It is much easier to use than a conventional desktop-computer or laptop and can convert any hard surface to a board with its ultraportable feature.

8) It is a very powerful teaching tool as: it enhances modelling and presentation, allows teachers to make effective use of classroom-resources, motivates learners, improve communication and can bring in depth clarity on a topic/subject matter

9) It can also be used for video conferencing, impressive sales presentations, staff training, meetings, briefings, group discussions etc and is thus an excellent ICT product for corporate sector.
